From January to August 2014, a core team of five IDEOers and ex-IDEOers designed and built giant, origami flowers that open/closed and lit up at night. Blumen Lumen was shown primarily at Burning Man 2014, but made appearances at the Exploratorium, Treasure Island Music Festival, and City Hall, to name a few. They continue to be shown at various events throughout the Bay Area.
With a PVC stem and corrugated polypropylene head, each flower is mechanically actuated using linear actuators and are wirelessly coordinated in light and movement. As the electrical designer, I fabricated and coded the PCB brains of each flower (along with some button operated remote controls).
